Six devotees died, and 13 others were injured after their van crashed into a roadside tree on the Trichy-Chennai highway in the early hours of Wednesday.
The group, hailing from Tiruvannamalai, had visited the Murugan temple in Thiruchendur and Meenakshi Amman temple before they started their journey home.
The accident occurred at around 2.30 am near Serathanur when the van driver, identified as Vasanth Kumar, lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and collide with a tree at high speed. Among those dead were two women.
Nearby commuters promptly informed authorities, leading to the arrival of a rescue team. The team, equipped with heavy machinery, worked to free 13 devotees trapped inside the wrecked vehicle.
The injured were rushed to the Mundiyambakkam Government Hospital for treatment.
The bodies of the six victims were taken to Villupuram and Mundiyambakkam Government Hospital for autopsy.
Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the accident.
